Taking some of the "Dick" out of Cheney...

People who know me well, know that I have never been, nor will ever be a Dick Cheney fan. This is putting it mildly. However, yesterday's headline led me to believe that perhaps, at least on this subject, he and I can agree. Glad to know there is something reasonable about this man...

By the way, comments welcome on this one! I know politics can get touchy, but I'm all for a spirited (and respectful) debate. I understand some of my readers do not share my opinion, but am curious to know as a whole what my readers think.

Cheney on gay marriage: 'Freedom for everyone'

WASHINGTON – Former Vice President Dick Cheney said Monday he supports gays being able to marry but believes states, not the federal government, should make the decision.
"I think, you know, freedom means freedom for everyone," Cheney said in a speech at the National Press Club. "I think people ought to be free to enter into any kind of union they wish, any kind of arrangement they wish."
Cheney, who has a gay daughter, said marriage has always been a state issue.
"And I think that's the way it ought to be handled today, that is, on a state-by-state basis. Different states will make different decisions. But I don't have any problem with that. I think people ought to get a shot at that," he said.

I agreed with him on this yesterday, too. Only I think I'm sincere. This could be a GOP ploy to get back in the good with the people.

Or a way to get his gay daughter to ever speak to him again?? loll

Why after 8 yrs as VP does he speak up now, at this very moment, I wonder? I'm glad to see he's a supporter of same sex marriage, adds a human touch to his Darth Vader persona, but I'm suspicious.

On another note, saying each state should decide, strikes me as an odd thing for marriage. If someone marries in Vermont then moves to Texas, is their marriage annulled? Not sure how that is supposed to work.

Yeah, why now?? Seems awful strange that he had a revelation right about now.

What do you think about Obama and the LGBT (June being gay/lesbian pride month?) That's a problem, I think.

I think we've heard from him more now than we have when he was VP.

I also was floored to find myself in agreement with him. WTF? We still fight on the phone about torture.

This is so hard for me.... I think people should be able to marry whoever they want, but then again I am a religious person, so who knows.

I can't marry Chris b/c his divorse is still pending, so I am literally feeling the frustration, first hand.

I'd still like to see something on the Federal level, but I was still kind of surprised that he came out with this statement. I'm not a fan of his either, but I'm glad he's on my side on this one thing.
